Jōdo-ji Temple, the national treasure, was constructed by Chōgen Jōnin in 1192 during the Kamakura era. The buddhist temple houses the especially beautiful “Amitabha Tathagata” and “Ryōkyōjiryūzō” statues created by the eminent (in Japan) Buddhist sculptor, Kaikei. At 5.3 meters tall, it’s indeed a very large wooden Buddhist statue.

Created with the cardinal direction of the setting sun in mind, the sunset from the west dyes the statue deep red. This invaluable figure with its awe-inspiring use of lighting, is also said to be an artifact of light, is one of a kind in the history of Japan and its culture and found only in Ono City.

Alongside the R175 road, this garden welcomes about 700,000 visitors annually.
The sunflowers in summer and cosmos in fall create a “carpet of flowers” in all their glory.

Within the garden, there’s the “Sunflower Tower” (the garden’s symbol), complete with multiple play structures, water fountains to play and run in, as well as “Sun Patio” and “Bussankan Ōsto”, places to buy the specialty products of Ono City.

Bubbling and boiling up from 1,300 meters underground in the south west of Ono City, next to Haku-un-dani Lake, lays the hot spring. The Haku-un-dani Hot Springs Yupika boasts an uncontested view of the forest from its dome-framed “Mori no yu (Hot water of the Forest)” onsen baths. The “Mizube no yu (Hot water of the Waterside)” baths, made of Japanese cyprus, emanate a sweet-smelling scent to accompany the view of the waterside.

With over 14 times the mineral count for standard onsen (hot springs) criteria, including calcium and sodium salts, you can enjoy the warming-effects of this superb onsen.

Outside the onsen itself, the natural ores exclusive to the bedrock of the valley provide areas of hot-water foot baths to heal your stresses of the day.

Yupika Hot Springs acts as a start and end-point for those traversing the Ono Alps, making it extremely popular.

Over one hundred Jersey Island dairy cows graze these vast pastures. Anyone is free to come and view the pastural scenery, along with the neighboring dairy factory (dairy factory requires a prior reservation).

For visitors who might feel a bit peckish after viewing the pastures and factory, we recommend making a visit to our neighboring “Miru-kāzu” restaurant for some soft-serve ice-cream made from our Jersey Island dairy cows. The rich and decadent taste of the milk will surely bring a smile to your face. For those wanting a bit more, we recommend our pizza made with a milk-rich dough.

Kōkokan houses all of the history, arts, and natural geological information pertaining to Ono City, displayed as a museum. Within the Kōkokan complex lies the quiet and peaceful Ryūfū-tei tea-ceremony room, perfect for enjoying the calming surrounding nature.

The Kanatsurubejō Castle was built starting in 1338 (Muromachi Era) on a mountaintop. From atop the mountain where the remaining ruins of Kanatsurubejō Castle still remain, one can see the entire city in all its glory.

Now, atop the grounds of a temple built in the latter half of the 7th century (no longer remaining), the “Kōdo-haijiato” History Park serves us today. Upon visiting Kōkokan, be sure to complete your visit with these culturally enriching places as well!
